Jim Horne notes:
"The distaff side" is the old idiom for the female line of a family. The male-line equivalent is the spear side (sometimes the sword side or the agnatic line).
-
The distaff is a tool used in spinning wool or flax, which was historically considered women's work (representing the maternal line).
-
The spear represents warfare and hunting, which was traditionally associated with men (representing the paternal line).
