  • Whitlow in cattle: A "whitlow" is a medical term for a painful, purulent infection or abscess on the finger or toe—most commonly found around the fingernail in humans. When applied to livestock like cattle, it refers to a similar severe inflammatory infection of the hoof, commonly known today as foot rot or infectious pododermatitis.

  • FETLOW: This is an archaic or regional dialect variant of foot-low (sometimes written as foulow or foul-claw), which was an old English colloquial name for this exact hoof infection in cows and sheep.
