50-Down: Why does "Historical bluebird" lead to NRA?
During the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the National Recovery Administration (NRA) in 1933. Its purpose was to stimulate economic recovery by eliminating cutthroat competition, setting fair practices, and establishing minimum wages and maximum hours.
To rally public support, businesses that complied with the NRA codes were given posters and stickers to prominently display in their shop windows.
The official emblem on those ubiquitous NRA posters was a striking, stylized blue bird holding a gear and lightning bolts. Formally, this symbol was known as the Blue Eagle, accompanied by the famous motto: "Member N.R.A. We Do Our Part." Because it was a giant, solid-blue bird plastered in store windows across the country, it was occasionally referred to colloquially in the era simply as "the big blue bird."
